In a city of swanky, modern business hotels, the National is something of an anomaly - it's a charmingly old-fashioned establishment with a slight air of having seen better days. Not that the hotel is in any way run-down - both the rooms and the public spaces are in excellent condition. The main attraction of the Hotel National is the unusual, old-fashioned decor - the marble-floored lobby leads into a piano bar, complete with comfy Edwardian armchairs, oil paintings on the walls and even the odd carved wooden cherub. The restaurant is similarly elegant, with crystal chandeliers dangling from its high ceilings. Upstairs in the bedrooms, the look is more functional, with rather ugly fake-walnut furniture but good-size bathrooms. Be careful to distinguish between twin and double rooms when booking - the twin rooms are long and narrow, with the beds set end to end rather than side by side. The staff here are exceptionally friendly and informal, with excellent English. There's also a free Internet terminal, and four airy, stylish meeting rooms.

Head round the corner to Wiesenhuttenplatz, a shady tree-lined square with a small garden where office workers relax at lunchtime. There's a children's playground here with a sandpit and climbing frame. Continue down Wiesenhuttenstrasse and you'll come to the Untermainkai, a riverside promenade that's great for evening strolls.
The National was established in 1951. The building was originally intended to be an old peoples' home, which may explain the rather traditional decor.
