Located right on a busy road and flanked by ugly tower blocks, the Hessisicher Hof is easy to overlook from the outside. Once inside, however, it's plush, elegant and brimming over with old-money class. Excellent service is a hallmark of this place - there are 150 staff for only 117 rooms.

The Hessischer Hof was once a palace of the Hesse royal family, and much of their antique silverware, porcelain and furnishings are still in place throughout the lobby, restaurant and elegant meeting rooms. Sunlight streams in through the glass walls of the stately winter garden, and only the cars whizzing past outside remind you that you're still in the 21st century. An army of flunkies in various frogged and epauletted uniforms leap at guests' every wish, while the rooms are sumptuously furnished with heavy fabrics, ornate mirrors and gleaming marble bathrooms. In the restaurant, white-jacketed waiters remove silver domes with a flourish to reveal a decadent selection of old European dishes, washed down with the finest wines in an ornate dining room that features a set of porcelain donated by Napoleon Bonaparte. Gym equipment is provided in every room.
