Address: Walther-von-cronberg-platz 1 , Frankfurt 60594, Germany Show on map
This has to be one of the most stunning of Frankfurt's skyscrapers - an imposing red brick tower overlooking the river. It's built to look like one of New York's 1930s edifices, but in fact it's only a few years old. The interior design also oozes retro, American-style class. The colour scheme throughout is an elegant, red, cream and black, with tweed upholstery and abstract prints on the walls. Rooms here have all the mod cons you'd expect, and some include a kitchenette. The apartments have a much bolder design than the rooms, with psychedelic-coloured giant bookshelves reaching up the walls, enormously tall windows and mezzanine floors. There's a bar, Harry's, filled with a cigar-smoky atmosphere (it's agreeably busy on weekends), a 'Californian' restaurant (think seared tuna on wasabi foam), and a spa and beauty centre, featuring a pool that's either a small swimming pool or a huge Jacuzzi, depending on your point of view. In the summer, seats outside on the cobbled square allow you to sip cocktails while contemplating the boats slipping by along the river just a few metres away. Climb to the 23rd-floor viewing terrace for spectacular city views.

Stroll for about ten minutes along the river away from the city and you'll come to Gerbermuhle, the cheery, bawdy beer garden where Goethe courted the daughter of a friend back in the 18th century. Sup beer, eat pretzels and eye up the local lasses and lads in true bad-boy-poet style.
