There's certainly no hotel in urban Frankfurt that can match the Kronberg for sheer palatial splendour. This former castle sits in a private park just outside the prosperous town of Kronberg on the outskirts of Frankfurt, and boasts its own 18-hole golf course.

Crammed full of antiques and oozing with history, this century-old castle is more like a museum than a hotel. It's frequented by business types out to impress their clients (or their colleagues) with full-on, old-European grandiosity. The rooms are furnished entirely with antique furniture (complete with scuffs and chips), and carpeted with (sometimes worn) Persian rugs. The lack of a fan or air-con can make even the gigantic suites stuffy in summer, but they're equipped with some modern conveniences, including wireless Internet. During summer, guests lunch on the elegant terrace, shaded from the sun by pink-and-white striped awnings while watching golfers trundling past with their carts. The food is predictable - heavy cuts of meat swimming in super-rich sauces, washed down by gallons of vintage wine and followed by wildly extravagant and calorific puddings.
