This family-owned, professionally-managed boutique hotel has bags of style and the most superb location. The old-meets-new design of the interior is handled with great aplomb. Three third-floor balconies (one section open to all guests) offer what are possibly the very best available views of Ghent's towers and canal-front houses.Common areas have sedate dark floors, large stylish candles and there's a splendid old wooden stairway curling upstairs should you wish to give the lift a miss. Luxuriously heaped pillows match the fine white linen and gently iridescent silk-effect bedspreads. Genuine 18th- and 19th-century beams have been retained but bathrooms are sleek modern affairs. Each room has its own character within the hotel's overall 'harmonious' concept. Unexpectedly spacious 'cosy' rooms have shower-only while most others have Jacuzzi bath units. The one junior suite has a free-standing bath and a modernist four-poster bed. Room 11 has a new but classically-styled claw-foot bath and rainforest shower. Its corner window offers an extra angle to the fine river views but there's no balcony. Suites at the rear offer longer-stay self-catering options. Those on the top floor have oblique roof-views towards the upper Gravensteen castle ramparts.

You're at the heart of old Ghent. The quaint alleys and super-atmospheric restaurants of the Patershol district lie immediately behind the hotel. Next door is the intriguing Anastasis art and icon gallery. If you thought that Brussels and Geraardsbergen had Belgium's only Mannekin Pis statues, locals might point out to you that Ghent actually has two.
The series of splendid Miro-esque original artworks that you find throughout the hotel are by local artists Antoine Hanssens and Jean Cardinael.
