This personable four-star hotel imaginatively combines an 18th-century mill-warehouse and a 16th-century Renaissance house with a brand new atrium-foyer. You enter beneath an almost botanical two-storey modernist chandelier that's worthy of a Tim Burton fairy tale.

Sitting right beside the canal it proudly dubs itself the 'only hotel accessible by boat'. While this is true, most canal-cruises turn around outside without stopping to pick up from the rear jetty (accessed down Raffinaderijstraat). It's definitely worth requesting an atmospheric canal-view room when booking. These are comfortable if not overly spacious incorporating chunky old beams, some bare brick walls and even the odd metal column or rusty pulley wheel preserved from the old mill building. The canal views themselves aren't the finest in Ghent as the facing buildings are undistinguished and graffiti blighted. However, the wonderfully light-suffused third-floor breakfast room is a highlight with glimpses of the Gravensteen and St Jacobs. In the basement are a sauna (extra fee) and a claustrophobic little four-machine fitness room.
