Lonely Planet review

A sturdy old refurbished guesthouse, this place offers value for money in a handy city centre location, and is the best on a street full of guesthouses. Despite there being 63 rooms it can often be full in summer and the place is a shrine to all things pine.Simple, attractive and functional rooms come with a choice of ensuite or shared facilities. Rooms vary in size as is common with these old properties, which weren't built with functionality in mind, and if you don't mind the stairs, the top floor has a clutch of cosy rooms. Number 25 is a great double and there's plenty of natural light in all the rooms on this floor. The decor is fresh, bright and overwhelmingly blue. Ensuites are generally a simple affair but they're clean and in good nick. Victorian House is surprisingly homely, given its size, and there's a plethora of eating and drinking options just down the hill. Wake up to kippers or smoked haddock for breakfast in the morning, a welcome change from the usual fatty sausage and bacon.
