Overlooking the grand Hanoi Opera House, this Hilton is imbued with much more character than your average international hotel. The seven-storey, curved design is in harmony with its more historic neighbour, neither overwhelming it nor looking out of place.A closer look reveals that the hotel is not quite as tall as the Opera House. Its imposing tall window spaces actually disguise several floors, and give the impression that the hotel is smaller than it is. The rooms and furnishings are more individual than you might expect from Hilton, incorporating subtle Asian touches with a generous dose of Laura Ashley chintz that, in the green-and-red clad standard rooms, can leave you thinking it's Christmas all year round. Still, it seems to work. All rooms have Internet for a fee, (free in executive rooms), and facilities are first class. The pool is especially popular and it's little wonder when your view from the sun lounge involves the impressive facade of the hotel and the Opera House itself. It's worth noting that room packages that include two buffet breakfasts for are much better value than paying as you go.

Get the concierge to find you a ticket to whatever performance is happening at the Hanoi Opera House next door. For great Vietnamese food, walk south along Le Thanh Tong for about five minutes to Emperor, where the food and mix of colonial and Vietnamese design are worth the money.
