It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the Melia's location, rooms, business facilities and very competitive promotional rates make it one of the most attractive top-end hotels in Hanoi. It's in the middle of the diplomatic, commercial and government quarter and an easy walk to the historic Old Quarter.

Operated by the Spanish SolMelia group, the ugly '80s-looking glass facade is undoubtedly a blight on the Hanoi skyline. Inside, however, the decor is an interesting mix of nouveau-Deco, floral chintz and, in the rooms, simple functionality. Indeed, it is the rooms with their spectacular views, Internet connections niftily fitted into the expansive desktops, and wi-fi (on executive floors) that make this a favourite among businesspeople. The huge 'Executive Suites' are the best value, but our favourite place in the Melia was the top-floor executive lounge. Unusually, it has a 12-seat board room that you can use for up to three hours, smoking and nonsmoking areas and - the best bit - a fantastic outdoor terrace where you can sip a cocktail and watch the sunset.
