The gigantic Sofitel Plaza has arguably the best views in Hanoi. Rooms overlook either the city and the Red River (odd-numbered rooms) or the city and West Lake (even-numbered rooms). It offers all the luxury you'd expect, but the lack of any real Asian flavour is a bit disappointing.

In fairness to the architects the building is designed to maximise the views and it does that well, with the stepped facade meaning most rooms have a corner window. However, the rooms themselves are a touch on the small side considering the cash you're forking out. The bedside switches control everything in the room and marble bathrooms are nice, but some rooms we saw weren't triple-sheeted, so don't go climbing onto the nice chintzy bedcover in the nude - those things only get cleaned a few times a year (fold the cover back first). Still, other perks make up for these drawbacks. The fitness centre is one of the best in the city, and the neighbouring pool is apparently the first in Asia with a retractable roof. And the rooftop Summit Lounge Bar is a great place for a sunset drink.
