In the heart of the city's historic Old Quarter, the Hanoi Star II is a new place with attractive rooms and welcoming, helpful staff. While most rooms are not enormous, they come with extras like safe deposit boxes and, in the foyer, free Internet.

If you're not fussed about a view, go for the cheaper rooms. A little extra buys you a rear room, which has attractive views of the tiled roofs of the Old Quarter but not much space. Families might go for one of the vast triple rooms, which have ample room for a third bed. Apart from the extra space, these rooms are a monument to the forestry industry with wood everywhere, including the ceilings. They also have a balcony that looks down onto the gravestone makers who populate the street below. This is great if you want a traditional atmosphere and enjoy waking up to the sound of chisels cutting names into stone - but bad if you're a light sleeper. The rooms are accessed by a lift, and breakfast is included in the price.
