The guest list gives you a hint - from Graham Greene and Somerset Maugham (he checked-in in 1923 to finish the Gentlemen in the Parlour) to Fidel Castro and George Bush Snr - the Metropole is Hanoi's most celebrated and storied hotel, one of Asia's colonial classics.

The Grand Hotel Metropole Palace opened its doors in 1901 and this part of the hotel is now known as the Metropole Wing. Its latest facelift was completed in 2005 and the results are impressive. The new rooms blend the old floorboards and high ceilings with modern luxuries and stylish touches in the headboards and silk trimmings. Graham Greene even has a suite named after him, but from any room in this wing you'll get a sense of walking in the footsteps of history. The same applies in the Le Club Bar, where Greene is reputed to have spent some time familiarising himself with the stocks of vermouth, gin and cassis when he stayed here in 1951. However, while the Opera Wing is nice enough it doesn't really match up - demand (and pay for) a 'classic' room or suite.
