Habana Vieja sprouts historic mansions-turned-hotels and the Valencia captures the intimacy and charm of a colonial villa like no other. The location - halfway between two photogenic plazas and steps from the Malecón - is superlative. If you snooze you lose, though, as the 14 rooms here book fast. Each room at the Valencia is materially different, with a distinct set-up. Everything in the two new, between-floor rooms are in tip-top shape: you can bounce a peso on the firm bed, the state-of-the-art TV boasts 61cm (24in) and the fixtures are classy. Unfortunately, these rooms are squeezed into a dark cranny with low ceilings that lock in a mildewy essence. Upstairs digs are infinitely better for a host of reasons, above all the enchanting interior balcony dripping with plants and a profound tranquillity that's rare in hustling Havana. The big rooms have marble floors and soaring, exposed beam ceilings, and historic details like brass bathroom fixtures or antique phones. Beds are hit-or-miss, with some evidence of middle sag. Don't overlook the bathroom arrangement - some toilet facilities are airplane-style cramped. Two of the suites have killer wraparound balconies.

Fuel up with tapas washed down with Spanish red wine at Bodegón Onda (867 1037; Obrapía, corner of Baratillo) before visiting the Basilica de San Francisco de Asis and the Museo del Ron down the block. Feeling European? Then chill out reading Gramsci in the Jardín de Diana de Gales (Baratillo, corner of Carpinetti), before gorging on an award-winning paella at the Valencia's Restaurante La Paella.
