Linna is Finnish for 'castle', which is a perfect fit for the building's turreted facade and the staff's courtly service. Built in 1903 as the student clubhouse for the technical university opposite, the decor does well to avoid a Dungeons & Dragons nerd's fantasy, with rooms tastefully kitted out with extra-long beds, minibar and, in some rooms, bathtubs.

The main part of the hotel is in a quiet modern annexe behind the front building. The rooms have been thoroughly renovated in Nordic chic style. Even the singles are spacious. Design features include bold lampshades, sleek modern cabinets and wood-framed fabric swatches on the walls that pass for works of art. There's a minimalist, even vaguely Japanese feel, all a significant contrast to the dragons-and-damsels whimsy of the facade. Two of the rooms interconnect to form a family room if required - this should be booked well in advance. A good breakfast is included in the price, but you'll pay a little more for a choice of three saunas.
