Handy for early ferries, this HI-affiliated place is right by the ferry terminals on peaceful Katajanokka island. It's got a few flashpacker options if you want to pay a little more. The building is somewhat institutional, but rooms are cheery enough.

The rooms come in two categories. The Eurohostel rooms are well worth the extra couple of coins it costs to upgrade, having been recently renovated and boasting bright parquetry floors and a more modern aesthetic. They also have better soundproofing against noisy neighbours. The unrenovated floors are no hardship, though - the rooms have bedside lights and the classic Finnish tables were originally designed by the famous architect Alvar Aalto. All of the rooms have shared but spotless bathrooms. There are also good kitchens on each floor; they lack an oven, but have compartmentalised fridges so you can lock your smoked salmon away, safe from greedy hands. There's also a surprisingly smart cafe downstairs, doing a breakfast buffet, pizzas and cheap lunches. And of course, there's no better way to start a day's sightseeing in Helsinki than with your free morning sauna.
