Address: Katajanokanlaituri 7 , Helsinki 00160, Finland Show on map
One of Katajanokka's greatest hotels, the Grand Marina is the result of a superb conversion from an early-20th-century brick warehouse. The rather drab facade belies the sophisticated rooms and suites within. The hotel is well located on the endearing Jugendstil island of Katajanokka right by the ferry terminals. Direct views of the harbour from the hotel are mostly limited to the conference centre and the terrace that is ideal for summer beers. The foyer has a cool, low-lit, and classy feel, which is continued in the air-conditioned rooms. There are some especially plush suites including a duplex whose upstairs bedroom has a harbour view; another has a charming Zen feel with the bed tucked away in a cosy nook. Service and facilities are particularly good, and although it's but a short stroll to the heart of town, this part of Helsinki is very peaceful.

Watching the leviathans glide into the heart of Helsinki provides one of the Finnish capital's lasting memories. It's also worth taking a stroll around the backstreets of this little island. Admire the extravagant Jugendstil facades and the chunky professionalism of the moored icebreaker fleet then have a meal at one of the waterside restaurants on Kanavaranta. Nokka is among the best.
This is one of the city's iconic but functional Art Nouveau buildings.
