This grand old hotel is right opposite the railway station and occupies an emblematic 19th-century building. Most Finnish towns had a seurahuone, which was a centre for high society to meet, a place for visiting officers, gentlemen and ladies to stay, and a venue for concerts and ballroom dances. This gracious building served as Helsinki's from 1914.

This hotel preserves some lovely Jugendstil features both outside and in. The common areas are delightful, with a fabulous restaurant, noble furniture and sparkling chandeliers, and the bar is topped by a lavish glass dome; you almost expect a Russian cavalry officer to dash in with an urgent message for the Tsar. The rooms are exceedingly spacious, with high ceilings and a classic feel that does justice to the building. Other rooms in a more modern wing are also elegant, but facilities are a little sparse considering the price. The hotel is very busy during the week, and staff are friendly but overworked; service can suffer a little as a result. Still, the atmospheric building more than compensates, and the location is excellent.
