The front doors of the Mandarin Oriental give way to smooth five-star elegance. Room styles aren't quite up to the expectations raised in the lobby, but the 'Harbour View' rooms have an obvious characteristic with which to make amends. The service is flawlessly courteous. This place is proof you shouldn't judge Hong Kong hotels by their exteriors. It looks like a dated condominium, which was probably in vogue when it was first built. Inside, it's very distinguished, with Asian antiques catching your eyes almost everywhere you look. You can dunk your cares away in the swimming pool, while those with a sweet tooth should visit the delectable cake shop on the mezzanine floor. Also on the ground floor is the Captain's Bar, a good place for a martini or the famous pewter mugs containing ice cold beer. The Mandarin is also home to some seriously fine dining, including the Michelin-starred Pierre Gagnaire's eponymous Pierre.
