The Peninsula Hong Kong occupies a fabulous grey-stone edifice that has enjoyed a hallowed reputation since it first opened its doors in 1928. Its classical architecture, rather like that of a grand old mansion, is a refreshing departure from the skyscraping modernity around it. Even the modern extension topped by two helipads blends well.

This is the sort of place where someone always seems to be there to open doors for you, including in the luxury boutiques that ring the ground floor and crowd the basement. The service is second to none, from the Rolls Royce Phantom or helicopter airport transfers to the impeccable lobby afternoon tea complete with string quartet. In the rooms, antique furniture is matched with oriental prints and ceramics and hi-tech mod-cons. The suites are massive, the best offering butler service and spa baths with spectacular city and harbour views through wall to ceiling glass. Elsewhere, the style runs from Art Deco in the Spring Moon Cantonese restaurant to Philippe Starck quirkiness in the Felix bar/restaurant on the 28th floor. The spa has a stunning pool.
