Just peep into this plush building and you'll understand why. Despite its relative age, it remains a more or less timeless and beguiling mixture of European-style elegance, snappy service and cutting-edge comfort. While the outside of the hotel is composed of rigid lines, the interior is nothing but rounded edges. The foyer, for instance, has a parade of pillars, scalloped stairs, a curvaceous reception desk and an oval ceiling, the combined effect of which is very easy on the eye. Rich European-style touches overlay this, with antiques, classical statues and colonial archways garnishing other parts of the hotel, including many of the on-site eateries and the celebratory Champagne Bar. The rooms and suites are sharply modern - excepting the marble bathrooms - with standard fittings including modular desks, leather chaise lounges and top-quality electronics equipment. The Spa (with its own heavenly little private treatment parlours-cum-bedrooms), looking out onto the harbour, is one of the most sumptuous and up to date in Hong Kong.

Down by the harbour in front of the Convention & Exhibition Centre is the 6m-high (19ft) Golden Bauhinia Statue, unveiled in 1997 to mark the return of Hong Kong to China. It's not that impressive but that doesn't stop busloads of Chinese tourists from swamping it.
