The art-deco 'Pink Palace of the Pacific' is undoubtedly Waikiki's most iconic hotel. Amidst a swath of white skyscrapers, you can't miss this pink Spanish-Moorish landmark, loaded with charm and sitting pretty right on the beach. If you want to step back into Hawaii's pre-statehood splendor, this is it.Built in 1927, the Royal Hawaiian is Waikiki's original luxury resort. Notable guests have included President Franklin D. Roosevelt, all four Beatles, the Shah of Iran, Charlie Chaplin and Babe Ruth. Today the Royal Hawaiian comprises the original, low-rise building, which maintains its classic elegance, as well as a 17-floor modern high-rise with some stellar ocean views. Surrounding the hotel is a lush garden with over 50 varieties of flora. The interior design of the hotel is ornately Victorian, with rows of pillars and intricate rugs. After multimillion-dollar renovations finished in 2009, the resort's 528 rooms feel fresh, especially the deluxe spa suites with carved teak furnishings, deep soaking tubs and cabana day beds lazing on private lanai. The oceanfront location is superb, and the well-heeled crowd pleasantly relaxed.

When it comes to Waikiki nightlife, the setting of the Royal Hawaiian's Mai Tai bar is almost unbeatable. It's a low-key venue (no preppy resort wear required) where you can often catch famous island musicians strumming their ukuleles, playing slack key guitar and singing Hawaiian tunes both classic and contemporary .
Shirley Temple made a huge splash in Hawaii when she stayed at the Royal Hawaiian in the 1930s - the hotel claims her namesake drink was invented here.
