Built in 1901, this beaux-arts building was O'ahu's first hotel on the beach. The historic Banyan Wing resembles a grand, plantation-style manor. The hotel is so popular for weddings that you're almost guaranteed to see blushing brides in fancy gowns and grooms in tuxes gingerly ambling about.Recently refurbished by Westin, this grand hotel's selling point is the historic main building. Everyone is welcome to sit on the front-porch rocking chairs or to sip a drink under the magnificent banyan tree near the beach. Upstairs is a little museum of 20th-century memorabilia, with free guided historical tours. The rooms themselves, especially in the newer additions (Diamond Wing, circa 1950s, and the Tower, circa 1970s), are graceful but not luxurious. On the ground floor, the Diamond Wing seems rather abandoned, with unused banquet furniture shoved to the side. The skyscraping Tower is preferable, especially its premier rooms with sweeping ocean views. The historic Banyan Wing has the most cramped rooms, which have mostly lost their period look, now upgraded with high-tech 21st-century amenities. Self-parking is inconveniently located off-site.

The Moana is so centrally located you can walk to either end of Kalakaua Ave in 15 minutes. The beach fronting the property is perhaps the most jam-packed spot in Waikiki. At sunset, seat yourself at the Moana's open-air Banyan Court and Beach Bar, where hula dancers and well-known island musicians perform. For nostalgia fans, afternoon high tea is served on the ocean-view verandah.
From 1935 to 1975, the long-running 'Hawaii Calls' radio show was broadcast from the Moana's famous banyan tree courtyard.
