With 1310 renovated rooms, the gigantic Marriott is an upscale mega-hotel, and you'll know it as soon as you encounter the sprawling lobby and shopping area spanning an entire city block. Furnishings are top-notch, often crafted from tropical hardwoods, with blooming orchids and manicured island foliage strewn about. The location is not exactly oceanfront, but it doesn't matter much because no buildings block the view of the beach directly across the street. Especially in summer, the Marriott is popular with families, and most guests hail from the US mainland. There are two high-rise towers (one with 25 floors, one with 33 floors) of equal quality. Rooms are well appointed, with high-quality linens, ergonomic work desks and flat-screen high-definition TVs. Both freshwater swimming pools are soothingly heated, and the exercise room is open 24 hours. A surprising amenity is a coin-op laundry with sleek wooden chairs, an assortment of magazines, air-con and no crowds. The shops are not as exclusive as Tiffany and Chanel at the opposite end of Kalakaua Ave, but they're not ticky-tacky tourist traps either.
