The only true mega-resort in Waikiki, the 22-acre Hilton is a self-contained, fantasy island 'village'. Nearly 3000 rooms are spread throughout five high-rise towers surrounded by pools, tropical foliage, flamingos and koi (Japanese carp). The lobby resembles an airport check-in queue - albeit with business travelers, families and retirees on package tours all sporting aloha shirts and sandals. The objective of a resort is to keep guests on-site with a plethora of amenities and activities. Case in point: here you'll find 20 restaurants and bars, 90 shops and boutiques, a spa and fitness center, to name just a few. The oasis-like grounds can be quite impressive. Families, in particular, appreciate the all-encompassing setting for keeping kids busy, including Rainbow Express Keiki Club day camps and a mammoth pool complex with waterfalls and slides. Upscale, if standard-issue, hotel rooms are pleasant, though not luxurious; you'll find the usual amenities plus a minibar. By far the most exclusive rooms are in the Ali'i Tower, which has a doorman, private swimming pool and superior rooms featuring marble finishes. The Rainbow Tower is closest to the ocean, offering some sweeping views.

At the Tapa Bar in the Tapa Tower, Jerry Santos and Olomana, renowned local musicians, usually perform on Friday, the same night when the hotel puts on a thunderous beach fireworks show. Currently, the Hilton presents the only luau on Waikiki Beach, a touristy affair complete with Samoan fire dancing and an all-you-can-eat buffet.
