The only true mega-resort in Waikiki, the 22-acre Hilton is a self-contained, fantasy island 'village'. Nearly 3000 rooms are spread throughout five high-rise towers surrounded by pools, tropical foliage, flamingos and koi (Japanese carp). The lobby resembles an airport check-in queue - albeit with business travelers, families and retirees on package tours all sporting aloha shirts and sandals.

The objective of a resort is to keep guests on-site with a plethora of amenities and activities. Case in point: here you'll find 20 restaurants and bars, 90 shops and boutiques, a spa and fitness center, to name just a few. The oasis-like grounds can be quite impressive. Families, in particular, appreciate the all-encompassing setting for keeping kids busy, including Rainbow Express Keiki Club day camps and a mammoth pool complex with waterfalls and slides. Upscale, if standard-issue, hotel rooms are pleasant, though not luxurious; you'll find the usual amenities plus a minibar. By far the most exclusive rooms are in the Ali'i Tower, which has a doorman, private swimming pool and superior rooms featuring marble finishes. The Rainbow Tower is closest to the ocean, offering some sweeping views.
