Istanbul's finest and most elegant choice, the Four Seasons is known for its service (extraordinary), history (deliciously disreputable), location (right in the heart of Old Istanbul) and rooms (wow). We've been sentenced to time at Four Seasons? Please throw away the key.

Four Seasons was built in the early 20th century as a prison - you can still see the watch towers and prisoners' graffiti. The location is ideal: a few steps from the Blue Mosque, Aya Sofya and most of Istanbul's main sights. Four Seasons is more like a private club than a five-star hotel. It doesn't have typical five-star recreation facilities like a pool and tennis courts. It's also minus the glitzy decor - no bling chandeliers here - relying instead on a charming understated elegance. The standard rooms are wonderfully large, with high-quality linen, king-sized beds and marble bathrooms. The deluxe rooms overlook the courtyard; some have views over Aya Sofya or the Blue Mosque. Four Seasons has only one problem: there aren't enough rooms for everyone who wants one.
