Behind Vardar's gorgeous Seljuk-inspired facade are a range of surprisingly top-grade rooms given the price. And it's well located just a few steps off Taksim Sq. Upon entering, look up to see the gorgeous ornate ceiling and sparkling chandelier. Unfortunately this elegance isn't a sign of things to come.

Vardar has been modernised extensively inside, and we can't say it's stylish though it's certainly pleasant enough. The lobby is an eclectic jumble. But you're here for the rooms, and these are excellent value: roomy and immaculately clean with pleasant modern decor which can't offend. The bathrooms are smallish, but squeaky-clean too. While rooms looking onto the street enjoy a view through lovely timber-framed windows, those at the back are much quieter, though a bit darker. Request a back room when you book if you'll be sleeping instead of trawling the nearby clubs. Service can be so-so - it depends who you approach. There's also a rooftop terrace with passable views.
