Address: 23 king david street , Jerusalem 94101, Israel Show on map
If you've ever heard of any hotel in Israel, it was probably the King David. Since its opening in the 1930s, this has been the standard-bearer for all other luxury hotels to compete against. But while it still exudes a grand old style, there are inconsistencies at the 'standard' room level; you're better off booking a deluxe.Once you've made it past the reception, take a good look around the extraordinary lobby, furnished with velvet couches, gold drapery and marble topped tables. The wood panelling, brass fittings and high ceilings add to the European charm. The lobby also contains a jewellery and cigar shop, and off to the side, a dimly lit reading room. Meals are taken in a grand ballroom down the hall, or out on the back patio that overlooks a lawn and swimming pool. The rooms here are picture perfect but sizes vary and some of the standard rooms are not much bigger than a janitor's closet. Also problematic is its popularity; if a diplomat suddenly turns up and takes over a dozen rooms, you may get bumped and moved to the Sheraton.

Even if you're not staying here, it's still fun to pop into the lobby, people watch and enjoy a drink while you rest your legs after a long day of sightseeing. After an evening meal, take in a film at the nearby Cinematheque, located on Hebron Rd.
The hotel was built in 1931 by the Mosseri's, a wealthy Jewish-Egyptian family. During the British Mandate period, it held the offices belonging to the British administration. This fact made it a target, and on 22 July 1946, the Jewish underground movement Irgun Zvai Leumi (National Military Organization), blew up the southern wing. The upper stories of this grand edifice were only added after 1967.
