A favourite among visiting celebrities, this is a sprawling, stylish and very pink hotel with apartment block-style privacy and a majestic setting above the zoo. Luxuries are laid on with a trowel, including instant hot water and impeccable service.

From afar, The Westcliff resembles the result of a prehistoric candy floss explosion. Close up, its hilly, sprawling (and very pink) layout may not be to everyone's taste (particularly to anyone in a wheelchair), but it's hard to beat for location and sheer sophistication. This former townhouse development was initiated in 1994 when the city's wealthier residents decided a secure future lay in gated, purpose-built communities. That idea never really got off the ground; the result is a 120-room all-suite hotel with mod cons (including instant hot water) and impeccable service. The somewhat overstated decor - recalling Shaka Zulu, Donald Trump and Louis XVI in equal measure - jars, but the stand-alone rooms afford a sense of seclusion usually absent from this type of hotel. And even if you're not a resident, the double-storey bar and sundeck are all yours.
