What was once a cute little 23-room outfit is now a bold 79-room business hotel thanks to an ambitious recent renovation. The good news is that the rooms in the new wing, while smaller, are more affordable. The bad news is that the hotel may have lost just a touch of character in the process.Orange lighting gives the spiffy rooms here a vaguely zen-like feel; the fun colours, bouncy sofas and chairs, and cool contemporary artwork by local artist Jurate Rekeviciute enhance the appeal. There's plenty of closet and mirror space in the standard, average-sized rooms. On the negative side, you couldn't swing a mouse in the tiny bathrooms and the pillows look like they've been run over by a steam roller. The singles are smart, no-nonsense affairs. There's free wi-fi in the lobby and a full complement of international press for sale. Parking costs extra per night.

You're a hop, skip and jump away from Nepriklausomybes aikšte (Independence Square) at the eastern terminus of Laisves gatve. The square is dominated by the neo-Byzantine St Michael the Archangel Church. The naked man statue facing the church on the square's south side may shock you if you're not prepared for it. Prie Akmenu at the end of Laisves is a decent place to eat.
