What could be more romantic than passing the night in a palace? The latest addition to Krakow's top-end accommodation options occupies the 19th-century palace of the noble Ostoya family. The palace has been meticulously restored, so its 24 rooms offer all possible modern amenities, but not too many original architectural elements (the exception being the colourful ceramic tile stoves, which seem to be around every corner). Nonetheless, the Ostoya Palace has managed to preserve the building's classical style, and at the same time satisfy the needs of the modern traveller; broadband Internet connections, satellite TV and air-conditioning are in each guestroom. The attention to detail on the part of the designer is evident: ornamental stencils on the walls, soothing neutral and pastel tones, and exquisite embroidered bedspreads characterise the decor. Guests can also look for luxuries like heated towel racks and bathroom floors, plush embroidered bathrobes and an enticing welcome gift.

Stroll into the Old Town, where, on its western edge, you can duck into the backdoor basement of a majestic church and find yourself in Padre (cnr uls Wislnej & Olszewskiego). Housed in the cosy confines of the church's vaulted cellar, this little pizza cafe is one of Krakow's most romantic spots. Bring a date!
