This spacious, pleasantly decorated and popular retreat has airy common lounges and a rooftop sitting area. Bright Western- or Malay-style rooms provide for a comfortable stay and the four- or six-bed dorms come with either fan or air-con.

It may be housed above a bar and a cafe, but the Pondok still somehow maintains more of a chummy beach house atmosphere than that of a city-central pit stop. This is thanks to a sandy paint job, bamboo blinds and comfy seating both in the reception and the upstairs lounge. There's a mix of room standards (you get what you pay for). Some are clean, close-quartered and open onto communal areas, while others are nicely set back. Communal amenities are passable. The lovely rooftop garden is a huge drawcard: the perfect place to chill with a cold drink, swap travel stories or enjoy the sparkle of KL at night.
