This temple of affluence in the shadow of the KL tower is corralled by blue Mercedes. With its overblown gold-pillared lobby, numerous restaurants and cafes, and amenity-rich rooms, the Shangri-La is a base of brilliance from which to enjoy KL.

The foyer of this famed Far Eastern chain wins guests over with its tumbling water feature, sunken lobby area with live music above the bar, and surrounding windows that look on to swathes of greenery. In fact, palms wave throughout the place, even in the super-plush, well equipped guest rooms (flat-screen TV, broadband access, huge views). Downstairs, spoking off the lobby, are some smart restaurants including Lafite (French) and Shang Palace (Cantonese). Elsewhere in this behemoth, you'll find a popular English pub and a fully plugged-in business centre complete with conference rooms and a commercial library. And let's not forget the frond-fringed pool and apparatus-heavy gym.
