Hanakiya is a charming little guesthouse close to Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Operated by a kind Japanese woman, this place is like staying at a friend's house. There are only three rooms and the price is extremely reasonable. Please note: check-in time is between 4pm and 9pm (but you may contact the hotel to arrange earlier arrival or luggage storage), and reception is closed between 9.30am and 12.30pm.

Hanakiya is hidden in the Higashiyama district, and specialises in receiving foreign guests. There are only three rooms so it's intimate and like a very comfortable homestay. The owner is friendly and easy to talk to and full of information for touring around Kyoto. The rooms are sparse, with tatami mats, futons, TVs and a small table. The bathroom is also typically Japanese, with a small and deep bath-tub. Please note: check-in time is between 4pm and 9pm (but you may contact the hotel to arrange earlier arrival or luggage storage), and reception is closed between 9.30am and 12.30pm. Payment is in cash only. Considering the price and the excellent location, this is a fine choice for those who want simple Japanese-style lodgings in Higashiyama.
