Lonely Planet review

Ever so slowly evolving into a party scene, the Luxor has shed its Egyptian skin. Some vaguely Art Deco touches remain in outdated pyramid guest rooms, which lack tubs. Tower suites have far better views, while the 40 exclusive 'Player Deluxe' rooms exhibit mod fashion sense and high-tech amenities.

Named after Egypt's splendid ancient city perched on the east bank of the Nile, the landmark Luxor once had the biggest wow factor of the South Strip's megaresorts. Out in front of the pyramid you'll still find a 10-story crouching sphinx and a sandstone obelisk etched with hieroglyphics. If you're staying in the older, slant-walled pyramid rooms, you'll ride the Luxor's unusual high-speed elevators, called 'inclinators' because they travel at a 39-degree angle. Avoid pyramid rooms on lower floors, which vibrate all night long, thanks to LAX nightclub downstairs. Whether in the gaudy pyramid or sleeker high-rise tower, ask for a room with a view of glittering Mandalay Bay next door, instead of the faux-castle towers of Excalibur. The Luxor's outdoor pool complex is ingloriously walled off from the parking garage by ugly concrete, but it's quite spacious.
