Lonely Planet review

Once the belle of the ball, this romantic megaresort is still a lavish escape. Rooms are decked out with artwork, marble bathrooms and views of the manicured grounds. Lakeside rooms overlooking the dancing fountains are in demand. A luxury spa tower is the rolled fondant on this five-diamond cake.

Irreverently built by Steve Wynn on the site of the legendary Dunes, the Bellagio is Vegas' opulent, if parvenu, pleasure palazzo. This Italianate resort, which starred in the remake of Ocean's Eleven, has been outshined by newer casino hotels. Yet with its prime mid-Strip location, it still commands a stable of gourmet restaurants, haute nightlife, a swish shopping concourse and a European-style casino. Real flowers cultivated in a gigantic on-site greenhouse brighten countless vases throughout the property, including on the Via Fiore. The outdoor pool area surrounded by private cabanas is accented by carved Italian columns and ornamental citrus and parterre gardens. While the luxurious bathrooms and closets are oversized, alas, the rooms feel small. As at any Strip megaresort, service can be impersonal. Baby strollers and unaccompanied children under 18 are not allowed on the grounds.
