Behind a tall bank of disparate trees and surrounded by a lovely garden, this historic house is a beautiful setting for a hostel, and a far departure from the clinical affairs you're likely to find in cities.Built in the 1920s, the charming cottage encompasses a grand lounge room and a scattering of double rooms with polished wood bed frames, wardrobes straight from the 1940s and simple, heritage-style ambience. Some rooms also contain big bathtubs and views of the garden (then again some are windowless and a tad plain so ask to see a few if you can). The dorm rooms are sunny and equipped with pine bunks, and the kitchen is homely - centred around a solid timber table where you can touch base with fellow travellers. There are also lounge rooms with numerous soft couches and the bathrooms are clean and bright.

If you head north along Main Rd you'll stumble across The Palais, a dazzlingly atmospheric 1920s theatre building which acts as a restaurant, cafe and cocktail bar. Enjoy a bite to eat, then relax in lush lounge chairs, play pool or even dance. The Palais is also known on the live country music circuit for hosting some of Australia's best acts.
