Fusing 19th-century elegance with cutting-edge design, Lisbon's funkiest boutique hotel bears the hallmark of interior guru José Pedro Vieira. The photogenic pad has graced the pages of glossies with its art-slung walls, Rui Chafes sculptures, magical 6th-floor bar and swish rooms evoking the colours of Lisbon.

José Pedro Vieira put his signature on Bairro Alto Hotel in 2005, blending clean lines with warm colours and eye-catching designer flourishes. His handiwork captured the attention of Condé Nast Hotlist and Tatler. Attentive staff welcome guests in the marble lobby, graced with Rui Chafes' contemporary cast-iron sculptures. Rooms are stylish but not overblown - think bold colours, plump beds and bird motifs. Five-star trappings include plasma TVs, DVD players, wi-fi, and marble bathrooms with shiny chrome fittings and glass-bowl washbasins. A gold mesh lift - inspired by Ferrero-Rocher, apparently - zooms up to the 5th-floor fitness centre where you can have a workout or massage. But the biggest stunner is the 6th-floor lounge bar, where cocktail sippers gather as Lisbon twinkles for views from the Rio Tejo to Cristo Rei.
