Lonely Planet review

Overlooking the palm-dotted, Parisian-style Praça da Alegria, this 19th-century pad hides simple but clean and cheerful rooms that are excellent value for money, especially given the location just steps from Avenida da Liberdade. With its lemon façade ablaze with pink geraniums in summer, this petite 19th-century guesthouse is a real find. Hardwood floors are polished to a sheen, while communal areas are glammed up with period touches from stucco to antique furniture. Rooms are airy - if slightly spartan - with plaid fabrics, chunky wood and impeccable bathrooms. Ask for a room facing the square for more peace and better views. Breakfast is a hearty affair that will set you up for exploring Lisbon. Oozing turn-of-the-century charm, Residencial Alegria has the makings, if not the trimmings, of a boutique hotel, without the sting in the bill.
