Elegant in an eastern bloc kind of way, the 171-room hotel joined the Best Western family who will undoubtedly continue to fix and fiddle with it so that it meets the exacting needs of the contemporary business traveller. The corner suites all have whirlpool baths.

The hotel has an enviable location on the corner of Slovenska cesta and Copova ulica. The hotel nabbed the corner spot some four centuries ago and has refused to give it up. In 1552 - or so the story goes - a pachyderm in Emperor Maximilian's retinue stopped at this exact spot for food and water on the long march from Spain to Vienna, hence the name Slon (elephant). It's a nice tale, but the present hotel dates very much from the 20th century, and nothing remains of the luxurious hostelry of old. Instead, Best Western has taken on what was presumably the best of the eastern bloc, complete with its faux marble columns lit by harsh neon light, and one of those dodgy nightclubs frequented by businessmen who really should know better. The rooms, however, are improving and the hotel can only get smarter. There are three wheelchair-friendly rooms.
