What makes the Sanderson so much fun is the way it has managed to turn traditional design completely on its head. The Sanderson is without doubt the hippest place to stay in London. Hidden behind a protected 1950s office building of aluminium and glass, this 'urban spa' is the brainchild of design duo Ian Schrager and Philippe Starck.

Whimsical fantasies are married seamlessly with practical designs - this is perfectly illustrated by the lobby, where a 1970s Dali 'Bocca' sofa sits comfortably alongside Louis XV-style furniture, and Venetian mirrors hang alongside 18th-century velvet theatre curtains. The gorgeous, romantic bedrooms are designed without any interior walls - the bathroom is encased within a floor-to-ceiling glass box and hidden behind silk curtains. Oil paintings hang from the ceiling above silver-leafed sleigh beds. Downstairs, the 80ft Long Bar is legendary for its design, quirky bar stools and cocktails, which change seasonally and feature such ingredients as fair trade chocolate and organic fruit. It's slightly surreal, but deliciously decadent.
