Smack bang in the heart of Theatreland, this hospital turned romantic boutique hotel is unquestionably one of the most charming places to stay in London - one of designer Kit Kemp's finest.

The 58 rooms are all different - different sizes, colours and themes - but they all feature Kemp's usual trademarks: quirky knick-knacks, bespoke furniture and a playful application of fabrics. Moroccan lamps hang from the corner of one room with a Middle Eastern feel, real feathers adorn the edge of fabric that's been draped and gathered to form a canopy over a double bed, and quilted fabric doubles as wallpaper. The surprisingly light luxury double in the basement is decorated in soothing hues of grey. It's one of the largest doubles in the hotel and very private. The public spaces are a modern version of the contemporary British sitting room. Large open fires, deep sofas, oak panelling and afternoon tea all provide a welcome sanctuary from the bustling metropolis. First-time guests get a complimentary massage and there's always a bowl of fruit at reception.
