The 'Met', as it's fondly called by those in the know, is most famous for the drunken antics of British celebrities in its members bar. When it first opened in 1997 it seemed that not a night went by without some kind of fracas involving a celeb and the waiting paparazzi. These days things are a little quieter around the Metropolitan, but it still attracts an über-cool, well-heeled crowd. A blend of sophistication and simplicity reigns throughout - the understated design must surely be part of its success. Large windows dominate the bedrooms and ensure that you wake up to Hyde Park views or go to bed looking at the bright lights of Mayfair. Subtle colours, pear-wood panelling and Egyptian cotton sheets whisper, rather than shout, elegance and luxury. Asian influences can be seen in the carefully selected pieces of furniture from the Far East and add a Zen-like calm to an already peaceful hideaway. It's as if the Met, like its previous customers, has grown up and now favours nights in with the TV rather than nights out on the town.
