The Ritz hotel is as synonymous with glamour and grandeur as the city of London itself. Over 100 years old, it still remains one of the original examples of sophisticated living and refined excess. Mere mortals may find it a tad intimidating, if not downright snobby.

Supposedly based on the designs of a French country house, the interiors at the Ritz seem more akin to a French palace than a country cottage. Bedrooms are painted in fairytale colours of blue, peach, pink and yellow with 24-carat gold leaf designs and Louis XVI-style furniture. Private dining rooms modelled on rooms at the palace of Versailles sparkle with mirrors and glisten with gold leaf. There's something almost dreamlike about the Ritz and its sumptuous fabrics, opulent furniture and design on a grand scale that make it a wonderfully romantic place to stay. What's more, with a ratio of two staff for every guest room, the service here is second to none.
