A true grande dame on the London hotel circuit, the majestic Claridge's is as splendid today as it was when it first opened its doors in 1854. It's a wonderful reminder of a bygone era with every floor and corner steeped in history. The corridors are nearly as wide as the bedrooms and were designed to allow ladies in their wide bell-shaped skirts to pass one another easily. The original 'Ladies Lift', complete with velvet-covered bench, still operates, although these days it's used as much by men as women. Many of the art deco features in the communal areas and in the 203 rooms and suites date back to the late 1920s, while the 1930s furniture once graced the staterooms of the decommissioned SS Normandie. The attention to detail is staggering; an army of skilled craftsmen from plasterers to French polishers are employed full-time to ensure that the original features are kept intact. With such a stunning combination of traditional and art deco design, Claridge's sits in a class of its own.

The Fortnum & Mason department store, almost as much a London institution as Claridge's, is nearby, as is the Royal Academy of Arts, which hosts an annual Summer Exhibition drawn from work by the public.
The service at Claridge's is impeccable and no request is refused. This extends to the female guest who insisted on having a new toilet seat installed because the seat in her bathroom (standard size) was too large for her small posterior.
