This small Ocean Ave hotel lavishes its guests with attention and lots of little luxuries. It affects a subdued SoCal chic, without sacrificing any amenities, such as Egyptian cotton sheets, wi-fi internet, a poolside gym and in-room spa treatments.

Savvy travelers who've visited Santa Monica before choose to return to the Oceana, north of the hubbub of the Pier and Promenade. Many rooms have ocean views and patios - relax in your own lanai and let the sea breezes drift over you. Extra-fluffy towels and bathrobes, Kiehl's bath products, and blackout curtains for a deeper sleep leave guests raving. Decor is fun and unfussy, with a color palette heavy on yellow. The hotel is not actually on the beach (it faces the bluff across from the ocean), but you're paying for suites that are twice or even three times the size of typical LA hotel rooms. Well-trained staff are unusually accommodating, and the Ocean Lounge restaurant serves contemporary California cuisine and smart cocktails by the pool (try the 'poolside lemonade').
