It's not often that a swimming pool rates a mention above all other hotel features. In this case the hotel itself is outstanding, but the rooftop swimming pool has some of the best views in Madrid - it's a favourite spot for moviemakers and photographers looking for sweeping Madrid views. The hotel's public areas are sumptuous, with sweeping marble surfaces and original design features from this distinguished 1930s building. Many of these original features spill over into the rooms, which are large and luxuriously furnished in a classic style. The bathrooms are everything you could want for the price, although - perhaps we're fussy - we have seen more generous baskets of bathroom goodies. A large proportion of the hotel's clients are businesspeople - there are few finer places to conduct business if you're out to impress.

One of the more pleasant corners of Madrid is not far away down the hill. Plaza de España is something of an oasis, but continue on up Calle de Ferraz to the Parque de la Montaña and the Templo de Debod (a slice of Egypt in the heart of Spain). This is one of Madrid's prettiest parks. The views back towards the royal palace almost rival those from your hotel's swimming pool.
