There are no palpable reminders here of Malta's British heritage, but this grand old dame feels like a relic from another era. Built in the late 1930s, it is one of Malta's classiest hotels and takes up some prime real estate, only a minute's walk from Valletta's City Gate.

Step away from the chaos of the City Gate bus terminus and up the garden path to find yourself in an oasis of calm. The summery decor of the elegant guest rooms conjures up a more tropical climate, with lots of white accented by oranges, yellows and green florals (nothing garish, mind). A higher rate gets you views of Marsamxett Harbour or the city walls of Valletta. The hotel's first-class facilities include 24-hour room service, free car parking (a boon in this traffic-clogged neighbourhood) and a business centre. There is also a magnificent seven-acre garden with mini golf course, kids' play area and heated outdoor pool - a fine retreat from the hubbub outside. The old-world club bar serves the perfect G&T, or you could try the classy restaurant, or the more casual brasserie. Or, in keeping with the surroundings, take afternoon tea in the lobby lounge...splendid!
