From the moment you walk into the vast lobby at the Palace, with its soaring stained glass dome and classical design, it's difficult not to be wowed by this extraordinary building. However, its confused design and mixed bag of rooms means it's anyone's guess whether you'll feel that impressed when you leave.Fresh from a refurbishment that blends old-world tradition with contemporary design, the Palace is a labyrinthine place with a mixed personality. The new bar and restaurant are smooth with pale-leather seating and soft lighting, but other public areas cling to their tartan sofas and lacy tablecloths without a hint of shame. The rooms are equally muddled so it's a good idea to be sure about what you're booking. The chic, contemporary rooms are probably the best the hotel has, with pale, natural colours enlivened by large abstract photographic prints above the beds. By comparison the older rooms linger firmly in the past, with heavy brocades in rich colours, canopy beds, dark-wood furniture and oversized table lamps. The cheapest rooms have not been refurbished at all and they're probably best avoided. However, get the room type you want, manage to find your way around and you'll probably love it.

Walk down to the Manchester Museum for a look at the Egyptian mummies and the pioneering work done to reconstruct their faces. Then excuse yourself and nip over to the Temple of Convenience, a tiny basement bar in a converted public toilet, for a quirky night out.
