Set in a converted 19th-century wool mill, the Arora joins Manchester's growing list of trendy hotels, except this one's got cheaper rates and pop star backing. Sleek and super cool, it's an extraordinary deal if you bag a special offer, and the place to hang out to see Manchester's movers and shakers.

Slap bang at the heart of the city it would be hard to find a better placed kip in town. The spacious, contemporary rooms come with leather easy chairs and subtle modern art, and the cool neutral colour scheme is only broken by the splash of deep red or purple in the lavish throws across the seriously comfortable Cloud 9 beds. Luckily for most, the influence of aging pop star and part-owner Cliff Richard is confined to five speciality rooms named after his most famous stage outings. They're tastefully restrained though and only boast the addition of signed posters, discs and photographs. By contrast the Obsidian bar and restaurant downstairs is uber-trendy and decked out with deep-blue light strips across the bar, cream leather booths, and a host of beautiful people drinking exotic cocktails. It's one of the favourite hangouts of Corrie stars and big-name footballers.
