Recently refurbished and exuding more personality and character than most corporate hotels, the Victoria & Albert is an impressive conversion of a former cotton warehouse. The hotel manages to seamlessly blend original features with contemporary design, all beautifully set on the banks of the River Irwell.

Original brickwork, heavy oak beams and large warehouse windows give the V&A some genuine soul and an elusive charm so often lacking in business hotels. The rooms feature exposed beams and a warm colour scheme of lime and rusty orange that works well against the bold, floral throws and the slick furniture. Giant squidgy beds, crisp cotton sheets, and feather pillows and duvets create a real sense of luxury, but the standard doubles have rather compact bathrooms with disappointing laminate counter tops. For the best experience ask for a top-floor room where the massive arched windows bathe the rooms in light, or better still opt for a grandly spacious suite. After the attention to detail in the bedrooms, the hotel's bar and restaurant succumb to the disheartening blandness of corporate styling and you may be better off eating out, particularly if you're travelling with children.
